OpenCode 2.0, Pi 1.0, Agent-Native, VibeWise and Genex
New vibe-coding & agent tools, rated for builders. Week of Oct 15, 2026.
Hey builders,
Two big open-source coding agents hit major versions, Builder.io shipped a framework for agents with real UIs, and two indie repos picked up stars fast. Here are five worth a look.
About the Vibe Score: every score is preliminary, based on docs, release notes, and demos. We haven't tested any of these hands-on yet.
1. OpenCode 2.0
VibeFinch review: OpenCode (early score 8.5/10) →
What it is: A big rebuild of the open-source coding agent. Terminal, desktop, and web now share one background service, plus a new API and an embeddable SDK.
For: Terminal-first devs, and anyone who wants to build their own version of a coding agent.
Vibe Score (preliminary, not hands-on tested yet): 8.5/10
- ✅ Background subagents, plus "Code Mode" so the model can chain MCP tools in one script (on by default for MCP servers)
- ✅ The SDK runs the same code as the CLI, so you can build on it
- ❌ Breaking changes: 1.0 plugins don't work in 2.0, the server API is completely different, and
tui.jsonconfig has moved - ❌ Major-version upgrade is manual: get on the latest 1.x, then run
opencode upgrade --major
Price: Free and open source (MIT). Bring your own provider, or use the optional OpenCode Go plan ($10/mo) for a curated set of models tested for agentic coding.
2. Pi 1.0 (+ Pi Durable)
🔗 pi.dev · announcement
What it is: Earendil's minimal agent harness hits 1.0, adding Codemode with native MCP, deferred tool loading, and virtual-model extensions.
For: Fans of small, hackable tools. Pi Durable targets long-running agent apps.
Vibe Score (preliminary, not hands-on tested yet): 8/10
- ✅ Minimal on purpose. New features are weighed against the complexity they add
- ✅ Virtual models: e.g. plan with one model, write the code with another
- ❌ Pi Durable is still experimental
- ❌ If you want lots of features out of the box, it'll feel bare
Price: Free (MIT, for both Pi and Pi Durable).
3. Agent-Native (beta) by Builder.io
🔗 builder.io/blog/introducing-agent-native
What it is: An open-source TypeScript framework for "agentic apps," where the agent and the UI share the same actions, data, and app state.
For: Builders shipping agents that need a real interface, not just a chat box.
Vibe Score (preliminary, not hands-on tested yet): 7.5/10
- ✅ Write an action once and it works in the UI, agent, HTTP API, CLI, MCP, and A2A
- ✅ Auth, permissions, and real-time sync built in. Bring your own key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, any OpenAI-compatible endpoint) or run local models via Ollama
- ❌ Still in beta
- ❌ A lot of framework to learn for a weekend hack
Price: The framework is open source. We haven't confirmed Builder.io's hosted pricing.
4. VibeWise
🔗 github.com/nykooi1/vibe-wise
What it is: A Claude Code / Codex plugin that asks how you'd approach a problem, talks through tradeoffs, and only writes code once you approve the plan.
For: Junior devs, learners, and anyone working in an unfamiliar stack.
Vibe Score (preliminary, not hands-on tested yet): 7.5/10
- ✅ Installs from Anthropic's plugin directory with one command
- ✅ Learning notes stay local in your project
- ❌ Slower on purpose. Not for "just ship it" days
- ❌ Very new (repo created Sep 28), though it already has ~3.6k GitHub stars
Price: Free (MIT). You need Claude Code or Codex.
5. Genex
VibeFinch review: Genex (early score 7.0/10) →
🔗 github.com/genex-games/genex-desktop
What it is: An open-source desktop app for making games with AI agents, with a Blender plugin for 3D assets.
For: Hobbyists and indie devs who want to vibe-code games.
Vibe Score (preliminary, not hands-on tested yet): 7/10
- ✅ Works with your Claude Code or ChatGPT subscription, or local models
- ✅ Can mix different models for the main agent, workers, and reviewers
- ❌ macOS (Apple Silicon) and Linux only. Windows is "soon"
- ❌ The README itself says "expect rough edges"
Price: Free (MIT). You pay for whatever model you plug in.
🚢 Ship it: a weekly commit-digest bot
Tool: Pi 1.0
Build: A script that turns the last 7 days of commits into a short Friday changelog you can post on X or in Discord.
How: Pi's own launch demo has Codemode writing exactly this kind of commit-summary script. Install Pi, point it at your repo, ask for the script, then run it on a weekly cron.
Send us the link and we'll feature the best ones.
